Melting, MEEEELLTTINNG

With some of the party not getting in until the small hours (!)  we were all a bit jaded this morning.  Charlotte was due to have a late breakfast/brunch with Caroline & David so had to watch us have our breakfast!  There was just time for a spot of tack shopping (never said tasteful!) before we trundled off to Red Rock Canyon - an area of conservation to the west of Las Vegas where we enjoyed a most pleasant circular drive and even found some shade at a picnic spot with benches & tables provided.  Funnily enough, after eating THE most enormous pancakes at The Griddle Cafe, Char, Caroline and David also ended up at the Canyon, albeit a little further behind the rest of the Rose party. The rocks were indeed red, with very clearly defined lines, created by layers of compressed ancient sand dunes, all criss-crossing in different directions, and displaying varying colours as a result of different weathering processes.

There were numerous hikes/trails all around this Canyon but with temperatures nearing 100 degrees (38 for us) we were not keen to take on any at all!  After finishing the drive we headed for the Hoover Dam which was very impressive, not very pretty and very very very hot!  The other party visited the dam at about 4:30, where it was not as completely oppressive then, before ending the visit with an amazing lake view lookout across the whole of the basin.

It was a short drive to our present campground in a place called Boulder City - surprisingly nice actually, as the city built up to support the building of the dam in the 1930s. The other party visited the historic area before a delicious dinner - ready for our trek tomorrow to the Grand Canyon.  Surprisingly the weather looks cooler over there which will come as some relief!
