Sooner or later, every Rose family holiday has to experience a day that doesn't quite go according to plan. Today saw the first diversion from the itinerary...
After an interrupted night of sleep, punctuated by a burst of apparent gunshot, many sirens, and someone on the phone sobbing for half an hour, we eventually departed for the RV depot in Newark.
The Woody Allen-like receptionist was very helpful in obtaining a taxi for us, after first establishing where exactly Newark was.
Saying goodbye to San Francisco, we arrived at the depot in hope that we could pick up our RV before the expected 1pm. We were in luck, although by the time we had had the tour of the van, picked up a US SIM card, had lunch, and done the shopping (including a horrific experience in Walmart), it was nearly 4pm.
The traffic was appalling, and delayed our journey significantly. We made our way to Groveland, where we had numerous campsites noted in the itinerary, although all of these were further down towards Yosemite. We found a sign for a campground, but by this stage it was dark, and we just could not find it at all. Stopping in the entrance to a house for a moment to decide what to do, the owner came out and invited us to park on a bit of flat ground he had. We gladly accepted, and after revealing the notable and numerous shortcomings of the van (non-functioning bathroom light being the most crucial) we finally settled down for the night at 10pm, too late for food.
Hopefully tomorrow will see the proper start to the holiday, as we finally reach Yosemite and begin the tour.
