After a poor night's sleep, as the campground was not only near the freeway, but also the railway whose drivers obviously felt it was necessary to announce their arrival! Several times! The trains were also several miles long and there were quite a few trains!
Some of the party decided to compensate by having a fry up - trying to use up some of the food that we have accumulated and find ourselves having to use whenever possible! The other person had a more modest breakfast and heroically finished up a rather black banana - this was due to poor storage so at the last stock check further supplies were purchased!!
Our journey today was to Bear Lake and having driven further yesterday, we decided to take a more scenic drive with the help of Google maps last night, the KOA map and Garmin - a winning combination as we reached our destination after successfully finding the route - No. 32 with superb colours of the Aspens, lovely rivers and lakes in the Wasatch National Forest (including Bald Mountain Pass, at 10 715 ft the highest we have been and the highest paved road in Utah [thank you Wikipedia]), then prairie land via the 150 to Evanston (including a brief encounter with Wyoming) and onwards via the 89 to Bear Lake.
The lunch stop was rather amusing - we seemed to miss all the attractive stops in the forest and even along the road (the vehicle takes some time to stop!) but when we spied a liquor store to replenish our dwindling supplies, we stopped on the car park for lunch!
Some of the campgrounds seem bent on challenging guests on arrival, with gullies placed across the entrance. As the vehicle necessarily hits the hazard at an angle, as it turns in, it rocks violently from side to side, no matter how slowly one approaches. This time, as we swung into the KOA facility at Bear Lake, the upper cupboard burst open and pasta was scattered over the kitchen area. The last time this happened it was coffee all over the place.
With the help of Bing we found somewhere to park and walk down to the lake via a boardwalk. Golden bullrushes swayed in the hot wind as we made our way to the lake edge. The colour of the lake is such a glorious shade of blue with almost white sand. We ventured into the water which actually wasn't too cold. After a pleasant wade we made our way back to the campground where the facilities are excellent with what can only be described as several individual bathrooms - most welcome!
The van has suffered another failure - one of the clothes locker doors has failed resulting in a hand injury although thankfully not major! Another email to Cruise America!
